In Tenby, by Mighty Boards and Cosy Cub Games, draft and play town cards – terraces, piers and landmarks – into your play area to create a lovely, Welsh seaside town.

The turn order / action selection mechanism is brilliant. In turn order, choose a numbered “day” action card. Lower values provide weaker / fewer actions but mean you get to take your turn first. The value of action cards will also determine turn order for the next round. There are always enough action cards for the number of players +1. The one that doesn’t get chosen remains for the next round, but has a life preserver token added effectively increasing its value. I really love this whole mechanic!

Each town card has various features (seagulls, benches, clouds etc.) and its own scoring criteria (e.g. 2 points per cloud on adjacent cards). The main challenge is strategically arranging cards into streets to meet as many scoring criteria as possible.

As well as town cards, you’ll draft resident cards which give end game scoring objectives, and life preserver tokens which can be spent to take additional actions.

The solo mode uses “compass” and “anchor” cards but generally follows exactly the same rules as the base game.

🧭 Draw two “compass” action cards and choose one

⚓ Reveal an “anchor” card; this determines who goes first and the cards your opponent wants. If you take their cards you’ll score penalty points, so there’s a toss up between whether the benefit of taking a card is greater than the penalty you’ll receive for doing so.

🛟 Unlike multiplayer, it’s possible to spend life preservers to reduce the value of your action card so that you still get to take your turn first.

While you can play to BYOS, the rulebook includes 6 scenarios to add an extra challenge. Each of these present a completely different challenge and show the inclusion of a solo mode here has been fantastically thought out and is not just an oversight.

There’s also an alternative solo mode (we’re really getting spoiled here) which I haven’t tried yet, but where it is possible to lose the game – a great option to have if you don’t enjoy BYOS.
